Alternative Medicine: Pseudoscience or Real Science

Alternative medicine has been described as pseudoscientific. The National Science Foundation has conducted surveys of the "Public Attitudes and Public Understanding" of "Science Fiction and Pseudoscience", which includes studying the popularity of alternative medicine. It considers belief in alternative medicine a matter of concern, defining it as "all treatments that have not been proven effective using scientific methods." After quoting the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry's listing of alternative medicine as one of many pseudoscientific subjects, as well as mentioning the concerns of individual scientists, organizations, and members of the science policymaking community, it comments that "nevertheless, the popularity of alternative medicine [with the public] appears to be increasing." "At least 60 percent of U.S. medical schools devote classroom time to the teaching of alternative therapies, generating controversy within the scientific community." It has been reported that universities are "increasingly turning their backs on homoeopathy and complementary medicine amid opposition from the scientific community to “pseudo-science” degrees." It looks like medical schools are voting that alternative medicine is useful if 60% of them devote classroom time to teaching alternative therapies. Or it is just because Americans are voting with the pocketbooks. More out of pocket money is spent on alternative medicine than on conventional medicine. Is that because Americans are stupid or is it because they know more than you think.

Let's take an example of Wikipedia "pseudoscience" from a recent clinical trial published in a leading medical journal.

This clinical trial shows clearly that a herbal extract is as good as a leading drug in regulating glucose metabolism. It actually did more as it lowered triglycerides by 35.9%, LDL cholesterol by 21 percent, and total cholesterol by 18% compared to no significant reductions with the drug. Other recent research shows that berberine has a role in cancer treatment and prevention.

The problem with alternative medicine here is that it is much cheaper and more effect than drugs. And last year there was not a single death from a supplement, yet medical error, primarily from drug effects, continues to be one of the leading causes of death.

Now if the evidence in the medical literature does not support your business plan you accuse all competitors of engaging in "pseudoscience". This is an ad hominem argument that requires no data to support it. And you hire people to manipulate the information Wikipedia.

The fact that Wikipedia supports this nonsense shows that their information is corrupted by vested interests. Of course the medical journals do no better. You can read a summary of how medical journal are often complicit in the corruption of medical data here.

U.S. Patent for Determining Resonant Frequency of DNA

There is substantial research on frequency effects on cells and pathogens. Unfortunately, none of it seems to get back those manipulating Wikipedia as most alternative approaches to conventional medicine, including frequencies, are asserted to be pseudoscience on Wikipedia without supporting evidence or with careful selection of limited evidence to support a biased position.

Unfortunately, the military suppresses thousands of patents, some of them highly relevant to advanced frequency applications for security reasons. Some of this work has come into the public domain through useful devices such as the Advance Biophoton Analyzer (ABPA). Fortunately, there is a fundamental patent below, published by the U.S. Patent Office that everyone interested should read. In addition, there are more than a dozen supporting approved patents that are worthy of further study.

Medical applications do not move into the clinical trail stage until very late in the process and the majority of new treatments and medical devices are not yet in the clinical trial stage. For some treatments and devices, clinical trials are not appropriate. About 85% of conventional treatment today has not been through the clinical trial process. Even worse, data is regularly compromised in the leading medical journals because of drug company sponsorship of research. Those who read the journals will have read the scathing editorials on this subject, for example, in the New England Journal of Medicine.

There is however, one useful patent in the public domain and those Wikipedia writers asserting this is pseudoscience would implement this patent and test it in their own labs if they were not funded by vested interests that do not want this research to come to light. Many university researchers have published positive results on using frequencies and some of this research is scattered throughout this blog.

Summary of 2011 Fluoride Research

Fluoride and Brain Damage

Evidence of fluoride's detrimental effects on the brain and central nervous system continues to mount. Among animal studies, chronic fluoride exposure in rats has been found to result in: detrimental changes in the sciatic nerve, spinal cord, and hippocampus and neocortex of the brain (Reddy et al., 2011); changes in the expression of several brain proteins, including those involved with cell signaling, energy metabolism, and protein metabolism (Ge et al., 2011); and changes in the structure and function of the synaptic interface, which would likely result in altered transmission of neural information (Zhu et al., 2011).

At least four more studies finding a link between fluoride exposure and decreased intelligence (IQ) of children were published this year, putting the total number of such studies at 25. Poureslami et al. (2011) found that children 7-9 years old living in a "high" fluoride city (2.38 mg F/L in drinking water) had significantly lower IQ scores than those living in a "low" fluoride city (0.41 mg F/L in drinking water). A previous study (Poureslami et al., 2010) had found that children 4-5 years old living in this "high" fluoride city had a daily fluoride intake of 1.71 mg. Frighteningly, this is actually less than than the average daily intake for similarly aged children in the United States (2.03 mg/day), according to a recent analysis by the U.S. EPA (2010).

Another study similarly found a trend towards decreasing IQ in 12-14 year old children living in a "high" fluoride village (2.45 mg F/L in drinking water), compared to those living in a "low" fluoride village (0.29 mg F/L in drinking water) (Eswar et al., 2011). Taking a different approach, a study by Shivaprakash et al. (2011) found that the mean IQ score of 7-11 year-old children with dental fluorosis (66.6) was significantly lower than those without dental fluorosis (76.4), with girls being more negatively impacted than boys. Another study by Ding et al. (2011) found a very significant association between fluoride levels in children's urine and IQ scores, with an estimated 0.59 IQ points lost for each 1 mg/L increase in urinary fluoride. It is again disturbing that similar urine fluoride levels have been observed in children (NRC, 2006) consuming what is considered the average amount of fluoride ingested by children in fluoridated communities (EPA, 2010).

Two reviews on the neurotoxicity of fluoride were also published this year. According to Valdez-Jiménez (2011), "The prolonged ingestion of [fluoride] may cause significant damage to health and particularly to the nervous system. Therefore, it is important to be aware of this serious problem and avoid the use of toothpaste and items that contain [fluoride], particularly in children as they are more susceptible to the toxic effects of [fluoride]." The CDC and HHS held an “off-the-record, not-for-press-purposes” phone conference with church and community leaders.
They want to administer flu vaccines in churches, synagogues and mosques.
They are encouraging church leaders to “influence” people to get the shots through clinics run by Walgreens, which would send pharmacists out to places of worship to mass-vaccinate people in the church/synagogue/mosque.

Recently the White House Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships, held an invitation-only call.
The call was co-sponsored by the U.S. Health and Human Services, the Office of Minority Health, and CDC.
Conspicuously, the end of the invitation read:
“This call is off the record and is not for press purposes” -- but it became public when it showed up on the HHS website.
Fortunately one of our staff was able to get on the call.
The focus of the call was on getting faith-based organizations to sponsor flu clinics with Walgreens.
Basically, they want to move inside your church, mosque or synagogue, and set up shop, with your pastor, priest, imam and rabbi on hand to convince you to get a flu shot.
As an example, they cited a priest who stopped in the middle of mass to roll up his sleeve and get vaccinated, inspiring the rest of his parish to line up behind him.

Update on Fluoride

Tampa, FL eliminated flouride in the water supply in October, 2022.

Fluoride is an extremely toxic carcinogen and induces neurological damage even in small doses. It should not be in our food and water. Children are being overdosed with flouride when they drink the water and add fluoride from toothpaste. Overdose means exceeding EPA standards which are not low enough. Just as in the case of radiation, no amount no matter how low is safe.

Fortunately, many scientists are banding together in the Fluoride Action Network to educate the public and they are having a significant effect.

Has fluoridation met it's Waterloo? Since the October 25, 2010 victory in Waterloo, Ontario approximately 1,180,500 people have been freed from fluoridation by a city council or referendum vote ending the practice. There have been victories in every month of 2011 so far, and since August victories have become a weekly event. Clearly, the momentum is building to a head, and we may have finally reached fluoridation's tipping point.

In the past week, three more North American communities stopped water fluoridation. The first was in the Canadian community of Churchill, Manitoba. On October 18th, a referendum vote was held and 58% of residents voted to stop the addition of fluoride to the water supply. The vote was a result of three years of campaigning by local citizens along with the group Churchill No Fluoride. While the referendum was non-binding, the Town Council is expected to follow the will of the majority and end the practice officially.

Also in Canada, the City Council of Moncton, New Brunswick will be making a decision regarding fluoridation in the next month. The campaign against fluoridation is being led by Fluoride Free Moncton. The New Brunswick town of Saint John will also be taking up the fluoride issue in the near future. If you live in New Brunswick, now is the time to get involved in these two campaigns!

The Second victory this past week was in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee. On October 20th, the board of directors for the Lawrenceburg Utility Systems voted unanimously to discontinue fluoridation, saving the city $22,000 a year. The board's decision was influenced by a letter recommending an end to fluoridation submitted by Tennessee State Representative and Doctor, Joey Hensley. Dr. Hensley has sent the same letter to every water director in his state, which is highlighted in this TV news interview.

The third victory was in Palmer, Alaska. On October 25th, the City Council voted 6-1 to adopt an ordinance prohibiting the addition of fluoride to the water supply. The decision came after months of discussion, and consideration of the growing opposition to fluoridation in Alaska after Juneau and Fairbanks recently rejected the practice. Bethel, Alaska is currently reviewing a similar ordinance banning fluoridation, and is also expected to make a decision within the next month.

Going into hospital far riskier than flying: WHO

(Reuters) - Millions of people die each year from medical errors and infections linked to health care and going into hospital is far riskier than flying, the World Health Organization said on Thursday.

"If you were admitted to hospital tomorrow in any country... your chances of being subjected to an error in your care would be something like 1 in 10. Your chances of dying due to an error in health care would be 1 in 300," Liam Donaldson, the WHO's newly appointed envoy for patient safety, told a news briefing.

This compared with a risk of dying in an air crash of about 1 in 10 million passengers, according to Donaldson, formerly England's chief medical officer.

"It shows that health care generally worldwide still has a long way to go," he said.

Hundreds of millions of people suffer infections linked to health care each year. Patients should ask questions and be part of decision-making in hospitals, which must use basic hygiene standards and WHO's checklist to ensure safe surgical procedures were followed.

More than 50 percent of acquired infections can be prevented if health care workers clean their hands with soap and water or an alcohol-based handrub before treating patients.

Of every 100 hospitalized patients at any given time, 7 in developed and 10 in developing countries will acquire at least one health care-associated infection, according to the United Nations agency.

"The longer patients stay in an ICU (intensive care unit), the more at risk they become of acquiring an infection," it said. Medical devices such as urinary catheters and ventilators are associated with high infection rates.

'HIGH-RISK BUSINESS'

Each year in the United States, 1.7 million infections are acquired in hospital, leading to 100,000 deaths, a far higher rate than in Europe where 4.5 million infections cause 37,000 deaths, according to WHO.

Abstract
Cancer cells have different metabolic requirements from their normal counterparts. Understanding the consequences of this differential metabolism requires a detailed understanding of glucose metabolism and its relation to energy production in cancer cells. A recent study in BMC Systems Biology by Vasquez et al. developed a mathematical model to assess some features of this altered metabolism. Here, we take a broader look at the regulation of energy metabolism in cancer cells, considering their anabolic as well as catabolic needs.

Cancer is a disease of uncontrolled cell growth in which cells acquire genetic alterations that allow them to proliferate outside the context of normal tissue development. In the evolution of this transformation, cells acquire mutations that confer selective advantages for the growth of the tumor. Genetic alterations in many of the known oncogenes are selected to adapt cellular metabolism to meet the requirements of rapid cell proliferation as well as autonomous growth and survival in an environment absent of contact with extracellular matrix. Accumulating evidence indicates that almost every known oncogene regulates downstream targets that are directly connected to metabolic regulation. A detailed biochemical and systems-level understanding of precisely how oncogenes rewire metabolism is essential to understand tumor biology, but concomitantly requires an assessment of the metabolic adaptations required to support the proliferation of cancer cells. Understanding the consequences of this differential metabolism requires a thorough analysis of glucose metabolism and its relation to energy production in cancer cells.

In a majority of tumor types, an enhanced rate of glucose uptake is observed and serves as a reasonable starting point for understanding differential metabolism in tumors. Otto Warburg’s initial observation that tumors often metabolize relatively large quantities of glucose predominantly through a fermentative-like metabolism, resulting in lactate production in aerobic conditions (termed aerobic glycolysis), provided the phenomenological foundation for studying altered metabolism in cancer [2]. Rapid progress is being made towards a molecular understanding of why lactate production from glucose gives cancer cells a growth advantage. Paradoxically, cells that achieve high rates of aerobic glycolysis often show relatively small changes in the rate of oxygen consumption in response to changes in glucose uptake; that is, oxidative catabolic flux through the Krebs cycle leading to mitochondrial ATP generation is somewhat independent of glucose metabolism.

More than 66 million women, men and children in 36 countries of sub-Saharan Africa suffer from human African trypanosomiasis (HAT). There are two forms of African sleeping sickness, caused by two different parasites:

Trypanosoma brucei gambiense , which causes a chronic infection lasting years and affecting countries of western and central Africa
Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense , which causes acute illness lasting several weeks in countries of eastern and southern Africa

When untreated, trypanosomiasis gives no respite from suffering and ultimately ends in death.The parasite that causes sleeping sickness is called the trypanosome. It is transmitted to humans through the bite of a tsetse fly; of the genusGlossina.
Human trypanosomiasis is therefore a vector-borne parasitic disease. The vector is found only in Africa, between the fifteenth parallels north and south. Its favoured habitat is the vegetation along watercourses and lakes, forest edges and gallery forests, extending to vast areas of scrub savanna.The tsetse fly feeds on the blood of animals and humans. Once inoculated by an infected fly, the trypanosomes proliferate and gradually invade all the organs of the host.

Most of the parasites are effectively destroyed by the host's natural defences, but some trypanosomes manage to evade the immune system by modifying their surface membrane, a process known as antigenic variation. The trypanosome can express thousands of variants, multiplying with each new surface change.At first, the main clinical signs of human trypanosomiasis are high fever, weakness and headache, joint pains and pruritus (itching). Gradually, the immune defence mechanisms and the patient's resistance are exhausted.

As the parasite develops in the lymph and blood of the patient, the initial symptoms become more pronounced and other manifestations such as anaemia, cardiovascular and endocrine disorders, abortion, oedema and kidney disorders appear.In advanced stages of disease, the parasite invades the central nervous system. The patient's behaviour changes; they can no longer concentrate and become indifferent to their environment. Sudden and unpredictable mood changes become increasingly frequent, giving rise to lethargy with bouts of aggressiveness. Patients are overcome by such extreme torpor that eating, speaking, walking or even opening the eyes call for an unsurmountable effort. (Health.com) -- Children whose mothers take Zoloft, Prozac, or similar antidepressants during pregnancy are twice as likely as other children to have a diagnosis of autism or a related disorder, according to a small new study, the first to examine the relationship between antidepressants and autism risk.

This class of antidepressants, known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), may be especially risky early on in a pregnancy, the study suggests. Children who were exposed to the drugs during the first trimester were nearly four times as likely to develop an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) compared with unexposed children, according to the study, which appears in the Archives of General Psychiatry.

MIAMI — A growing number of communities are choosing to stop adding fluoride to their water systems, even though the federal government and federal health officials maintain their full support for a measure they say provides a 25 percent reduction in tooth decay nationwide.

Last week, Pinellas County, on Florida’s west coast, voted to stop adding fluoride to its public water supply after starting the program seven years ago. The county joins about 200 jurisdictions from Georgia to Alaska that have chosen to end the practice in the last four years, motivated both by tight budgets and by skepticism about its benefits.

Eleven small cities or towns have opted out of fluoridating their water this year, including Fairbanks, Alaska, which acted after much deliberation and a comprehensive evaluation by a panel of scientists, doctors and dentists. The panel concluded that in Fairbanks, which has relatively high concentrations of naturally occurring fluoride, the extra dose no longer provided the help it once did and may, in fact, be harmful.

It is a view that also was shared by four out of seven commissioners in Pinellas County who first raised the proposal as a cost cutting measure.

Finland vows care for narcolepsy kids who had swine flu shot

HELSINKI — The Finnish government and major insurance companies announced Wednesday they will pay for lifetime medical care for children diagnosed with narcolepsy after receiving the swine flu vaccine.

"The compensation will provide much-needed financial assistance for the families, although it cannot take away the emotional distress caused by this condition," Social Services and Health Minister Paula Risikko said in a statement.

Finnish and international researchers recently found a conclusive link between the Pandemrix swine flu vaccine and new cases of narcolepsy, a chronic nervous system disorder which causes people to often uncontrollably fall asleep.

The Finnish Pharmaceutical Insurance Pool (LVP), which represents insurance companies, said Wednesday it would honour all insurance claims in this category.

LVP said it would review each claim individually to calculate the scope of the payout.

The Finnish government meanwhile agreed to cover any medical costs exceeding the insurance claims.

In Finland, 79 children between the ages of four and 19 developed narcolepsy after receiving the Pandemrix vaccine in 2009 and 2010.

Of these cases, an unusually high number, 76, also suffered from bouts of cataplexy, suffering hallucinations or paralysing physical collapses, according to Finnish research.

Nanobacterium (pl. nanobacteria) is the unit or member name of a proposed class of living organisms, specifically cell-walled microorganisms with a size much smaller than the generally accepted lower limit size for life (about 200 nanometres for bacteria). Originally based on observed nano-scale structures in geological formations (including one meteorite), the status of nanobacteria is controversial, with some researchers suggesting they are a new class of living organisms capable of incorporating radiolabeled uridine, and others attributing to them a simpler, abiotic nature. One skeptic dubbed them "the cold fusion of microbiology", in reference to a notorious episode of erroneous science.

The term "calcifying nanoparticles" (CNPs) has also been used as a conservative name regarding their possible status as a life form. The most recent research tends to agree that these structures exist, and probably replicate in some way. Their status as living entities is still debated, though some researchers claim that the case that they are nonliving crystalline particles is conclusively proven. In medicine, they have been implicated in the formation of both kidney stones and arterial plaque.

Transfer factors could transfer DTH of a specific form from a skin test positive individual to a skin test negative individual who subsequent to the transfer would skin test positive for that antigen.[6] In a subsequent study in 1955 he demonstrated that DTH could be passed serially, first from a skin test positive individual to a test negative individual, who became test positive, then 6 months later from the second individual to another test negative individual who became test positive.[7] At the time antibodies were the focus of immune research and little was known of the importance of DTH and of the involvement of T-cells in immune response. Transfer factors promote wellness via cell mediated immunity. These compounds are components of colostrum, an infant’s first meal. They bridge the generational gap by passing cell mediated immunity from mother to infant.

Some time ago a child my spouse was caring for came down with a runny nose which the following day became flu like symptoms with a fever. My wife had a pronounced swelling of the parotid gland. Frequencies were looking like a flue frequency set (see previous message below). She thought her lymph glands were swollen, but plate zapping lymph nodes with the frequencies detected did not do much.

A physician friend examined her and thought the swelling was lower on her jaw than the parotid gland. Since she was not noticably ill and mumps can be serious in an adult who was never vaccinated or had mumps, he discounted it. However, when I began treating her, the swelling was definitely above the jaw bone in the location of the parotid gland.

Since I happen to have a homeopathic Mumps nosode, I checked and she tested positive. Within a day or two the Mumps nosode along with some Oscillicosinum and frequency treatment kept her well and eliminated the swelling.

She, of course, infected me with the disease and over the course of a few days, I was able to identify the frequency set. I was never really ill because I detected the frequencies as soon as minor symptoms appeared.

More recently my spouse came back from the orthodontist with a swollen left jaw. After a few days she said it feels like mumps. Sure enough it was. Mumps is very infectious and I had to run frequencies for the whole family.

Malaria: Evolutionary Biology

The malaria parasite is easily killed by electromagnetic frequencies and there are a number of small pilot projects using zappers in Africa. I've talked with some of the larger nonprofits about expanding these studies as I have seen 100% remission consistently with a few hours of application of exact frequencies. However, the response has been that if a non-profit research institute looked at anything other than conventional drugs they would get all their grants terminated.

It is important to keep up with the latest research on malaria as frequencies can also modify protein production. Virulent forms of this and other diseases (particular viral infections) can kill by evoking an overwhelming immune response. Thus frequencies must modulate immune response through reducing certain protein production as well as kill the pathogen. Those who are intelligent enough to use this technology can at least protect themselves.

Abstract
The pathogenesis of severe malarial disease is not yet fully understood. It is clear that host immunopathology plays a central role, and a recent paper in BMC Evolutionary Biology suggests that the ability of the parasite to stimulate interleukin-10 production is a major factor and speculates on its impact on the coevolution of host and parasite.

Plasmodium falciparum malaria is responsible for over 1 million deaths each year, mostly in children under the age of 5 living in sub-Saharan Africa. And yet the number of malaria infections which go on to become life threatening is proportionally very small, as the majority of these infections either remain asymptomatic (due to the acquisition of clinical but non-sterile immunity after repeated exposure) or progress to disease without lethal complications [1]. Viewed in an evolutionary context, the existence of severe disease presents a population-level compromise for the parasite between the necessity of bearing factors that increase survival and transmission and the risk that these will stimulate a host immune response that will either curtail the infection or perversely cause the death of the host (thus also spelling the end for the parasite). With the aim of identifying factors that may be relevant in the evolution of this balance, Long et al. in a recent article in BMC Evolutionary Biology [2] have investigated the influence of the inflammatory response on the severity of disease in a rodent model of malaria, and we discuss here how their results may bear on the coevolution of parasite and host, in the context of what is known about the determinants of severe malarial disease in humans.
Factors in the severity of malaria

Severe malaria can be resolved broadly into two different syndromes: cerebral malaria and severe malarial anemia. Cerebral malaria is associated with impaired consciousness and sometimes convulsions and coma, and can leave those who recover with long-term neurological problems. Its pathophysiology is not fully understood but it is probably due to a combination of the obstruction of cerebral capillaries by parasitized cells and an overactive inflammatory response. Severe malarial anemia occurs when the suppression of erythrocyte production, combined with the destruction of red blood cells by the parasite itself, leads to a particularly profound anemia – which can cause shock and respiratory distress. Both syndromes can involve a range of metabolic complications such as acidosis or hypoglycemia [3].

Both host and parasite factors are likely to contribute to the processes leading to severe disease, and Long et al. have examined one possible interaction using mice infected with different clones of the rodent malaria parasite Plasmodium chabaudi chabaudi. Specifically, they have shown that blockade of the receptor for the anti-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-10 (IL-10) has a dramatic impact on time to death of the infected animal, particularly where the infecting parasite clones are normally avirulent. This result certainly implies that IL-10 plays a fundamental role in controlling the inflammatory response to malaria and that its absence can contribute to the demise of the murine host; Long et al. propose that the ability of the parasite to stimulate IL-10 production is a factor determining its relative virulence. However, whether regulation of the inflammatory response by IL-10 actually plays a part in the evolution of parasite virulence remains an open question and requires a careful consideration of the population-level consequences of interactions between host susceptibility and parasite virulence factors.

Japan's damaged nuclear plant in Fukushima has been emitting radioactive iodine and caesium at levels approaching those seen in the aftermath of theChernobyl accident in 1986. Austrian researchers have used a worldwide network of radiation detectors – designed to spot clandestine nuclear bomb tests – to show that iodine-131 is being released at daily levels 73 per cent of those seen after the 1986 disaster. The daily amount of caesium-137 released from Fukushima Daiichi is around 60 per cent of the amount released from Chernobyl.

The difference between this accident and Chernobyl, they say, is that at Chernobyl a huge fire released large amounts of many radioactive materials, including fuel particles, in smoke. At Fukushima Daiichi, only the volatile elements, such as iodine and caesium, are bubbling off the damaged fuel. But these substances could nevertheless pose a significant health risk outside the plant.

Naegleria fowleri ( /nəˈɡlɪəriə /; also known as "the brain-eating amoeba") is a free-living excavate form of protist typically found in warm bodies of fresh water, such as ponds, lakes, rivers, and hot springs. It is also found in soil, near warm water discharges of industrial plants, and minimally chlorinated swimming pools (there is no evidence of this organism living in ocean water) in an amoeboid or temporary flagellate stage. It belongs to a group called the Percolozoa or Heterolobosea. Although not a true amoeba, the organism is often referred to as an amoeba for convenience.

Naegleria Fowleri living in warm lakes this summer enters the body through the nose and attacks the brain where it feeds on your brain until you die.

Even though encounters with the microscopic bug are extraordinarily rare, it has killed six boys and young men this year. The spike in cases has health officials concerned, and they are predicting more cases in the future.

“This is definitely something we need to track,” said Michael Beach, a specialist in recreational waterborne illnesses for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“This is a heat-loving amoeba. As water temperatures go up, it does better,” Beach said. “In future decades, as temperatures rise, we’d expect to see more cases.”

According to the CDC, the amoeba called Naegleria fowleri killed 23 people in the United States from 1995 to 2004. This year health officials noticed a spike with six cases – three in Florida, two in Texas, and one in Arizona. The CDC knows of only several hundred cases worldwide since its discovery in Australia in the 1960s.

In Arizona, David Evans said nobody knew his son, Aaron, was infected with the amoeba until after the 14-year-old died on Sept. 17. At first, the teen seemed to be suffering from nothing more than a headache.

“We didn’t know,” Evans said. “And here I am: I come home and I’m burying him.”

After doing more tests, doctors said Aaron probably picked up the amoeba a week before while swimming in the balmy shallows of Lake Havasu, a popular man-made lake on the Colorado River between Arizona and California.

Telomeres play a central role in cell fate and aging by adjusting the cellular response to stress and growth stimulation on the basis of previous cell divisions and DNA damage. At least a few hundred nucleotides of telomere repeats must “cap” each chromosome end to avoid activation of DNA repair pathways. Repair of critically short or “uncapped” telomeres by telomerase or recombination is limited in most somatic cells and apoptosis or cellular senescence is triggered when too many “uncapped” telomeres accumulate. The chance of the latter increases as the average telomere length decreases. The average telomere length is set and maintained in cells of the germline which typically express high levels of telomerase. In somatic cells, telomere length is very heterogeneous but typically declines with age, posing a barrier to tumor growth but also contributing to loss of cells with age. Loss of (stem) cells via telomere attrition provides strong selection for abnormal and malignant cells, a process facilitated by the genome instability and aneuploidy triggered by dysfunctional telomeres. What are Telomeres?

Telomeres are strips of DNA located at the ends of chromosomes. They are composed of a few hundred or more repeats of the nucleotide sequence TTAGGG (1,2) (where T= thymine; A = adenine; G= guanine). They act as protective ‘caps’ preventing loss of DNA, and also guard against fusing, fraying and unraveling of chromosomes, (1,3,4) which can expose and damage the genetic material and cause mutations.

Since investigators in the 1930’s coined the term telomere (from the Greek telos for ‘end’ and meros for ‘part’), a massive amount of research has been undertaken to explore the structure and function of these important chromosomal caps. More than 8,000 scientific papers have been written and the 2009 Nobel Prize in physiology and medicine was awarded to three scientists for their work involving telomeres.

Hayflick’s Fifty Year-Old Observation

Back in the 1960’s, geneticist Leonard Hayflick observed dividing human cells and made an important discovery that had a substantial impact on the future of anti-aging research. But before we examine his finding, let’s look very briefly at cell division, or mitosis ─ a fundamental, genetically-controlled process that enables a cell to duplicate itself, including chromosomes (through the process of DNA replication), to form two identical ‘daughter’ cells. Cell division allows an organism to develop and differentiate into an adult from multiple progressive stages beginning with the initial union of reproductive cells (the germ cells, egg and sperm), and after growth and birth, to construct and repair tissues.

Hayflick reported that human cells cultured under perfect conditions in his lab divided only a finite number of times in a progressive course leading to replicative senescence, (5) when they stop dividing altogether and become dysfunctional (the term senescence is roughly equivalent to ‘aged.’). Once cells have reached their proliferation maximum, or so-called Hayflick limit, they stop functioning properly or die through the process of apoptosis. (1,6,7)

Why do cells stop dividing when they reach their Hayflick limits? Is there a cellular mechanism that monitors and counts each cell division up until the final one? And does Hayflick’s observation have any relevance to aging?

In the early 1970’s, Russian scientist Alexey Olovnikov began to answer some of these questions ─ he made the connection between a DNA replication problem involving telomeres and the limitation on cell division reported by Hayflick.

The latest scourge crossing the country has a taste for the big city.

The Asian tiger mosquito, named for its distinctive black-and-white striped body, is a relatively new species to the U.S. that is more vicious, harder to kill and, unlike most native mosquitoes, bites during the daytime. It also prefers large cities over rural or marshy areas—thus earning the nickname among entomologists as "the urban mosquito."

"Part of the reason it is called 'tiger' is also because it is very aggressive," says Dina Fonseca, an associate professor of entomology at Rutgers University. "You can try and swat it all you want, but once it's on you, it doesn't let go. Even if it goes away, it will be back for a bite."

Swat Team: What Works

Dr. Fonseca is leading a U.S. Department of Agriculture effort to develop a cost-effective method to control the Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) population. The university is currently focusing on using larvacides, which render larvae incapable of growing into adults.

Since urban areas tend to be warmer—often by 5 to 10 degrees—than rural areas, cities are seeing tiger mosquitoes earlier and sticking around longer, often into October.

The discovery of alien DNA in the published human genome raises important questions about preventing 'virtual infections'

Earlier this year, molecular biologists announced that 20 per cent of nonhuman genome databases are contaminated with human DNA, probably from the researchers who sequenced the samples.

Now, the human genome itself has become contaminated. Bill Langdon at University College London and Matthew Arno at Kings College London say they've found sequences from mycoplasma bacteria in the human genome database.

This contamination has far reaching consequences. Biotech companies use the human genome database to create DNA chips that measure levels of human gene expression. Langdon and Arno say they've found mycoplasma DNA in two commercially available human DNA chips.

Anybody using these chips to measure human gene expression is also unknowingly measuring mycoplasma gene expression too.

In some ways, this is hardly a surprise. "It is well known that mycoplasma contamination is rife in molecular biology laboratories," says Langdon and Arno. With any luck the discovery of this stuff in the human genome database will focus minds on the problem.

A key question is the nature of this kind of information transmission. These mycoplasma genes are clearly successful in reproducing themselves in silico. One possibility is that we're seeing the beginnings of an entirely new kind of landscape of infection.

Here, genes that can masquerade as human (or indeed as other organisms) can successfully transmit themselves from one database to another. And if we think of this as virtual infection, a sure bet is that we'll be worrying about virtual evolution in the near future.

But what to do? The level of contamination and the way in which it is spreading suggests that researchers are losing the battle to eliminate it. "We.. fear current tools will be inadequate to catch genes which have jumped the silicon barrier," they say.

Most frightening of all is the possibility that Langdon and Arno may have only scratched the surface. "Having found two suspect DNA sequences, it seems likely the published "human genome" sequence contains more," they say.

If virtual infection is really as big a problem as Langdon and Arno suggest, we may well need to protect databases with the genomic version of antivirus software, a kind of virtual immune system.

But this in itself is likely to trigger an evolutionary arms race that selects genes most capable of beating the safeguards.

Clearly, this is a nettle that needs to be grasped quickly. That's if it's not too late already.

Lyme’s Disease is NOT RARE – Bigger Than AIDS

In the late 70s, a Lyme, Connecticut mom reported a mysterious new disease sweeping the town, leaving its people with debilitating, chronic symptoms. In 1981, Dr. Willy Burgdorfer discovered the Lyme bacteria, called Borrelia burgdorferi.

The bacteria spirochetes closely resemble syphilis in their make up. While a carrier tick is feeding, its backwash enters the host and transmits Lyme. The corkscrew spirochetes wreak havoc, drilling into any healthy cells and tissue. They create painful, crippling neurological and immunological damage.

In the beginning, doctors only knew that it resembled syphilis but remained unaware of its wide spread, how to proceed, and the political, medical clash that awaited them.

In recent years, the CDC has reported over 35,000 new Lyme cases annually but admit that since it is so overlooked the actual number may be 12 times higher, up to 420,000 cases each year.

Think of how much more likely it is to contract Lyme than the media-touted West Nile virus which is only reported at around 1,300 cases annually. If the actual number of Lyme cases is even just a modest amount above the CDC’s 35,000, then Lyme is far more prevalent than AIDS, reported at 39,000 cases annually.

Since 1982, the number of cases continues to climb and spike prompting media reports and health officials to label it epidemic as early as 1989. Reported cases have tripled since 1992. Every summer we hear the same cautionary reports. Yet doctors constantly tell their patients “You don’t have Lyme” or “Lyme only happens in such-and-such state, not here.”

CRKP: carapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae

CRKP is becoming wide spread. This week I am seeing it in the U.S., Europe, and Korea. For frequency work it is simply another anti-biotic resistant bacteria. Frequencies will be available on the Frequency Foundation subscribers list.

Antibiotics are increasingly becoming an obsolete technology. They were never good for the human body's immune system even when they killed bacteria. I haven't used any since 1993 and they should only be used in emergencies when nothing else works.

An antibiotic-resistant superbug once thought to be rare is spreading through health-care facilities in Southern California, health officials say.

Roughly 350 cases of carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae, or CRKP, were reported in Los Angeles County between June and December of 2010, according to a study from the L.A. County Department of Public Health to be presented April 3 in Dallas at the annual meeting of the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America.

"These patients tend to be elderly, they are commonly on ventilators and they often stay at the facility for an extended period of time," Dr. Dawn Terashita, medical epidemiologist and lead author of the study, said in a statement.

CRKP joins other superbugs such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA, in a league of bacteria that outwits typical antibiotics.

"We develop new drugs to defeat the infections and germs change to get around those drugs and this is one of those cases," Dr. Richard Besser, ABC News chief health and medical editor, said today in an interview on ABC News' "Good Morning America."

Besser is a former acting director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. "It's like an arms race and in many ways the germs are winning," he said.

CRKP is not new to California, or the rest of the country for that matter. The CDC has been tracking it across 35 states since 2009. It is young, however, compared to MRSA, according to Dr. Arjun Srinivasan, associate director of the CDC's health care-associated, infection-prevention programs.

"But in terms of mortality and morbidity, it's very, very serious," Srinivasan said. "These infections are more difficult to treat than MRSA."

CRKP is an enterobacterium like salmonella and E. coli.

It is unclear how many cases of the 350 reported by Terashita and colleagues were fatal. It is also unclear whether the infections stemmed from improper care at long term-care facilities or the frailty of the patients they serve. But Terashita said infected patients tended to have health problems that often resulted in antibiotic use, which might have made them more susceptible.

"All of these factors contribute to a greater risk for health care-acquired infections," she said.
Besser said, "This superbug is very dangerous. It tends to affect people that are in the hospital for long periods of time; people that have underlying medical problems; people who have been in nursing homes."
Although healthy people in the general public are not at risk for infection, they could transmit the bacteria to sick loved ones.

"As a loved one of someone that is in the hospital, you have to be vigilant when you're sitting there with your relative and anyone comes in and wants to touch your relative without washing their hands," Besser said. "You have to say something. ... It does come down to simple things like that, making sure no one is giving a germ to someone you care about."

Health-care workers should be equally vigilant, Besser said. "A lot of it comes down to hospitals," he said. "They need to make sure that health-care workers aren't spreading it from patient to patient. That's mainly what takes place.

Preventing the spread of CRKP is key because the infections are so difficult to treat, the CDC's Srinivasan said. The "mainstay treatment," colistin, is an older generation antibiotic with toxic side effects. And newer, more effective treatment options are unlikely to be developed any time soon.

Demodex and Rosacea

Rosacea flareups can be alleviated in minutes with the FSCAN. Some rosacea is associated with a Demodex infection, a common mite. I do not agree with Umar that we live in harmony with this parasite, as it affects bodily functions even when there are no observable symptoms. You are likely to feel better with this parasite gone.

In 2004, I suggested FSCAN users should try 892, 753, 558, 345, 176454. 285526, 385497, 456777. The lower frequencies are Rife octaves which can be used on machines like the EM6+ which only go up to 10000HZ. The higher frequencies are four life cycle stages of the parasite. All must be eliminated simultaneously or the infection will simply grow back from remaining larvae or eggs. Periodic treatment every few weeks may be needed to prevent flareups, although newer technologies and better frequencies can clear this parasite for extended periods. Also, I have seen rosacea infections caused by parasites other than this one, so these frequencies may or may not be the right ones.

Since this item was first published in 2004, there have been major upgrades in both technologies and frequencies for dealing with demodex. Those interested should become a subscriber to Frequency Foundation and/or request a consultation.

BACKGROUND: The cause of rosacea is unknown; among other factors a causative role has been postulated for the hair follicle mites Demodex folliculorum and Demodex brevis. OBJECTIVE: Our purpose was to compare the population density of Demodex mites in facial skin of defined categories of patients with rosacea with control subjects. We also assessed the impact of tetracycline therapy on the mite population. METHODS: The population density and distribution of Demodex mites were studied in the facial skin of 42 patients with rosacea and 42 age- and sex-matched control subjects. Mites were counted in measured skin surface biopsy specimens obtained from six standard facial sites with cyanoacrylate glue. RESULTS: The mean mite count was 49.8 (range 2 to 158) in patients with rosacea and 10.8 (range up to 97) in control subjects (p < 0.001); the highest density of mites was found on the cheeks. A statistically significant increase in mites was found in all subgroups of rosacea, being most marked in those with steroid-induced rosacea. Mite counts in patients with rosacea before and after a 1-month course of oral tetracycline showed no significant difference. CONCLUSION: Increased mites may play a part in the pathogenesis of rosacea by provoking inflammatory or allergic reactions, by mechanical blockage of follicles, or by acting as vectors for microorganisms.

The hair follicle mites Demodex folliculorum and Demodex brevis and their role in the pathogenesis of rosacea have been the subject of much debate in the past. We studied the prevalence of Demodex mites in facial skin biopsies obtained from 80 patients with rosacea, 40 with facial eczematous eruption and 40 with lupus erythematosus discoides. The mite prevalence in the rosacea group (51%) was significantly higher than in the rest of the study population (eczema 28% and lupus discoides 31%). Demodex mites were found on all facial sites. The most infested areas in the whole study group were the forehead (49%) and the cheeks (44%). Males were more frequently infested (59%) than females (30%). We did not find any significant difference in mite counts of infested follicles between rosacea and the control group. A lympho-histiocytic cell infiltration was seen around the infested hair follicles. Our results suggest that Demodex mites may play a role in the inflammatory reaction in acne rosacea.

Devastating new infection from ticks found in blood supply

Babesiosis cases are on the rise, which is much like Lyme Disease, as it is contracted from a tick bite, this infection is going undiagnosed with concerns that it is being spread not only by ticks, but also in through the donated blood supply.

As if Lyme Disease wasn't enough to worry about when spending anytime outdoors in the warm weather, now a new disease is growing in numbers that is caused by the same insect that causes Lyme, a tick, according to the website Green Living. Lyme Disease is contracted from a tick bite and can be a debilitating disease and even fatal if left untreated. Now the tick bite is causing babesiosisnce. It is a potentially devastating infection that is gaining a foothold in the Northeast. Government researchers have found this disease is becoming more predominant, especially the Lower Hudson Valley and coastal areas of the Northeast.

Babesiosis results from infection with Babesia microti and causes a malaria like illness. This parasite lives in red blood cells and is carried by deer ticks. Though the disease is far less common than Lyme disease, babesiosis can be fatal, particularly in people with compromised immune systems. One of the concerns about the spread of this disease is through the blood supply. Without a widely used screening test for this disease, this is a threat to the blood supply. Sanjai Kumar, who is the chief of the laboratory of emerging pathogens at the Food and Drug Administration says, “We are very worried about it and are doing everything in our power to address this,” according to the NY Times.

The most recent report for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has seen a 20-fold increase in cases of babesisosis. In 2001, there were six cases of this disease reported in the Lower Hudson Valley. This jumped to 119 in 2008. This is particularly of concern in areas that see the greatest cases of Lyme Disease, because it is the same ticks that carry both babesisosis and Lyme. Coastal Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Long Island are the places where Lyme Disease is endemic.

Dr. Peter Krause, senior research scientist at Yale School of Public Health said it is in these areas that see Lyme Disease where babesiosis is also becoming very common. One study done on residents of Block Island R.I. showed that babesiosis to be just 25 percent less common than Lyme Disease. Other areas are seeing the spread of this disease, like the Upper Midwest, but to a slower degree, says Krause.

The E. Coli outbreak that has sickened 1,000 and killed 16 so far in northern Germany involves one of the rarest strains of the disease known to science. Originally reported to be from Spanish cucumbers, German authorities have now admitted their suspicions were wrong and they don't know where the latest outbreak originated. But what they do know is that the strain of the disease that threatens northern Germany and greater Europe is a particularly rare and nasty one known as E. Coli O104:H21.

The more common strain identified as E. Coli O157 affects some 70,000 people in the United States each year, causing bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and sometimes death. But its treatment and tracking is more familiar to scientists than the more aggressive and rare strain currently affecting Germany. In fact, the O104:H21 strain is so rare that leading German E. coli researcher Helge Karch had in 30 years only heard of one other outbreak of the strain, according to Der Spiegel.

On Tuesday, the German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung reported that Karch had discovered that the O104:H4 bacteria responsible for the current outbreak is a so-called chimera that contains genetic materia from various E. coli bacteria. It also contains DNA sequences from plague bacteria, which makes it particularly pathogenic. There is no risk, however, that it could cause a form of plague, Karch emphasized in remarks to the newspaper.

Some alternative health news sites have been leery about posting Germany’s E. Coli outbreak as anything but an unfortunate event probably caused by the overuse of antibiotics and unsanitary factory farm conditions. That is, until evidence of a more nefarious nature emerged.

Recently, Health Ranger, Mike Adams broke news with telling evidence showing that the only plausible way this strain could be resistant to eight classes of antibiotics at the same time was through systematic manipulation. All these drugs are not used in agriculture, nor would the bacteria encounter them naturally.

But wait – it gets worse. A leading German E. coli researcher has discovered that this particular bacteria contains DNA sequences from the Bubonic Plague!

Also noteworthy, but under the radar, is that Japan experienced a similar outbreak (but with E. coli O111) resulting in two deaths as of May 11.

There are some strange and coincidental things to consider. Germany (so far anti-GMO) experienced the European Union herbal remedy ban just a couple weeks before the outbreak was detected. How on earth does historical Bubonic Plague DNA get mixed up randomly with an E. coli bacterium? And why was one of the only real cures for these victims banned in the EU January 1st of this year?

Autism and Vaccines Researcher for CDC, Indicted for Fraud and Money-Laundering

Autism continues to radically increase in the U.S. population. Conventional authorities assert that there is no known cause and that there is no link to vaccines.

One thing is for sure. Something is causing autism rates to increase. Therefore, it is interesting that a CDC researcher that helped to debunk the vaccine data is now indicted for fraud.

Remember when the vaccine mercury/autism link was supposedly debunked? Poul Thorsen, a Danish scientist who coordinated the CDC-funded “debunking” studies, was indicted on April 13th for 13 counts of fraud and 9 counts of money-laundering. Charges relate to his work for the CDC to study correlations between thimerosal (mercury-based vaccine preservative) and the increased rates of autism, among other infant and childhood disabilities he studied. He allegedly stole around $1 million from Atlanta’s CDC autism research money. The fraud charges have to do with dozens of invoices he submitted for “expenses.” The invoices falsely claimed laboratory work from the CDC.

SafeMinds group has closely watched vaccine-autism data brought forth since 2001. Read below about the incongruities they discovered in Thorsen’s work and his emails compelling the CDC to compel the journal Pediatrics to publish his work as a “strong piece of evidence that thimerosal is not linked to autism.” Due to Thorsen’s misconduct, SafeMinds and Coalition for Mercury-Free Drugs are calling for independent federal investigation for data manipulation.

This is possibly our biggest infection control dilemma yet. Although cases of this bacterial infection has been on the rise worldwide for the last 10 years, there is an alarming spread recently across the US. Thirty-five states have reported the outbreak, but there could be more in states not required to report it. What makes this opportunistic “superbug” such a nightmare is that it is Carbapenem-Resistant, meaning “last resort antibiotic” resistant. It’s a Carbapenem-Resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP); Klebsiella pneumoniae is a strain of Klebsiella which is related to E. Coli and Salmonella from the family Enterobacteriaceae.
Found inside the gut, outside of the gut, it can cause lethal infection. The major reservoirs of infection are the gastrointestinal tract of patients, catheters, unclean instruments, and the hands of hospital personnel. It zeros in on hospitals, ICUs, long term care faciities like nursing homes, and those with immuno-compromised conditions. It is a potential community-acquired type of pneumonia (different, not acquired from hospitals) and the bug has an incredible ability to mutate and resist. It does indeed carry a fatality rate between 35 and 50 percent or more.
Are we just to avoid hospitals and nursing homes to keep from this public threat? While CRKP and other resistant strains laugh in the face of antibiotics, there is some glimmer of hope. As of 2005, the EPA registered chlorine dioxide (aka MMS) as a disinfectant for MRSA. Pathogens cannot resist it and it does not harm humans. Unlike bleach, it requires very small concentrations, and leaves no residue. It completely breaks down thick cell walls which is one of the reasons these superbugs are so resistant.

Moving to a new city for college means dealing with new allergens. Summary

Background The sap from Euphorbia peplus, commonly known as petty spurge in the U.K. or radium weed in Australia, has been used as a traditional treatment for a number of cancers.

Objective To determine the effectiveness of E. peplus sap in a phase I/II clinical study for the topical treatment of basal cell carcinomas (BCC), squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) and intraepidermal carcinomas (IEC).

Methods Thirty-six patients, who had refused, failed or were unsuitable for conventional treatment, were enrolled in a phase I/II clinical study. A total of 48 skin cancer lesions were treated topically with 100–300 μL of E. peplus sap once daily for 3 days.

Results The complete clinical response rates at 1 month were 82% (n = 28) for BCC, 94% (n = 16) for IEC and 75% (n = 4) for SCC. After a mean follow-up of 15 months these rates were 57%, 75% and 50%, respectively. For superficial lesions < 16 mm, the response rates after follow-up were 100% for IEC (n = 10) and 78% for BCC (n = 9).

Conclusions The clinical responses for these relatively unfavourable lesions (43% had failed previous treatments, 35% were situated in the head and neck region and 30% were > 2 cm in diameter), are comparable with existing nonsurgical treatments. An active ingredient ofE. peplus sap has been identified as ingenol mebutate (PEP005). This clinical study affirms community experience with E. peplus sap, and supports further clinical development of PEP005 for the treatment of BCC, SCC and IEC.

Abstract

PURPOSE: Because in vitro studies suggest that low levels of electromagnetic fields may modify cancer cell growth, we hypothesized that systemic delivery of a combination of tumor-specific frequencies may have a therapeutic effect. We undertook this study to identify tumor-specific frequencies and test the feasibility of administering such frequencies to patients with advanced cancer.

PATIENTS AND METHODS: We examined patients with various types of cancer using a noninvasive biofeedback method to identify tumor-specific frequencies. We offered compassionate treatment to some patients with advanced cancer and limited therapeutic options.

RESULTS: We examined a total of 163 patients with a diagnosis of cancer and identified a total of 1524 frequencies ranging from 0.1 Hz to 114 kHz. Most frequencies (57-92%) were specific for a single tumor type. Compassionate treatment with tumor-specific frequencies was offered to 28 patients. Three patients experienced grade 1 fatigue during or immediately after treatment. There were no NCI grade 2, 3 or 4 toxicities. Thirteen patients were evaluable for response. One patient with hormone-refractory breast cancer metastatic to the adrenal gland and bones had a complete response lasting 11 months. One patient with hormone-refractory breast cancer metastatic to liver and bones had a partial response lasting 13.5 months. Four patients had stable disease lasting for +34.1 months (thyroid cancer metastatic to lung), 5.1 months (non-small cell lung cancer), 4.1 months (pancreatic cancer metastatic to liver) and 4.0 months (leiomyosarcoma metastatic to liver).

CONCLUSION: Cancer-related frequencies appear to be tumor-specific and treatment with tumor-specific frequencies is feasible, well tolerated and may have biological efficacy in patients with advanced cancer.

CDC flu statistics continue to rise for the 2011 flu season. The flu is a variation of the swine flu from last year. It appears to have evolved in the wild and picked up many new organisms.

The flu is transmitted by dozens of strains of microscopic airborne parasites. In Japan, infected persons wear a face mask to avoid transmitting the flu from expelling these airborne parasites which a loaded with viruses, bacteria, fungi, and other organisms.

Recent research on school children shows the flu expands in networks of friends, not so much in families or even between children sitting next to each other in school. This is likely due to the fact that the virus itself is not the main route of infection. Parasites are transmitting mainly by talking with one another face to face.

A severe, lingering flu was initially experienced in London in October and multiple clients began reporting the same symtoms in various parts of the U.S. and Europe. Constant travels through major airports in the world in November-February expanded this frequency set. It is now in all major airports. The people in my office call it the flu that never ends.

Ineffect this would amount to a kind of quantum teleportation of the DNA.

Tap water, and bottled water that originates from tap water, is loaded with fluoride. Though you may have been lead to believe this substance to be vital to the dental health of you and your family, this is simply not the case. Unfortunately, the belief that fluoride prevents cavities is a common misconception. In fact, the exact opposite is true.
As this recent study done on children in India shows, fluoride is anything but a cavity fighter. Fluoride is a toxin that actually leads to an increased risk of cavities and can cause a wide range of health problems, including weakening your immune system and accelerating aging due to cellular damage.
One study, published in the September 2001 issue of International Journal of Pediatric Dentistry, found that South African children who drank water containing high levels of natural fluoride (3 ppm), had more tooth decay than children in other parts of South Africa who drank much lower concentrations (between 0.19 to 0.48 ppm). And fluoride-saturated American teenagers had twice the rate of cavities as the South African children drinking low levels of natural fluoride!

A new study in the Journal of the American Dental Association, published in October of last year, also found that, contrary to what most people have been told, fluoride is actually bad for teeth.The study found that fluoride intake during a child's first few years of life is significantly associated with fluorosis, and warned against using fluoridated water in infant formula.

In response, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has updated the information on their website, stating:
"Recent evidence suggests that mixing powdered or liquid infant formula concentrate with fluoridated water on a regular basis may increase the chance of a child developing ... enamel fluorosis." "In children younger than 8 years of age, combined fluoride exposure from all sources—water, food, toothpaste, mouth rinse, or other products—contributes to enamel fluorosis."
More importantly however, on January 7, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that they will take another look at the standards and guidelines for fluoride in drinking water due to the increase in dental fluorosis.

This is the first time in 50 years that the federal government has recommended changing the amount of fluoride added to public water supplies. They're now proposing the recommended amount of fluoride in drinking water be reduced to 0.7 milligrams per liter of water. The recommended range has been 0.7 to 1.2 mg/L, so for many communities this new level will equate to a fluoride reduction of nearly 50 percent! The EPA is also initiating a review of the maximum amount of fluoride allowed. Depending on their findings, the maximum amount of fluoride allowed may also be revised. This is at least a step in the right direction!

However, this is likely not the last you'll hear on this issue. According to a recent press release by The Fluoride Action Network, "Fluoridegate" is fast approaching as it's becoming clear that dental fluorosis is "just the tip of the iceberg." The press release states:
"A series of disclosures are surfacing about the actions of water fluoridation promoters that point to a likely tsunami of Fluoridegate investigations, hearings, and explosive courtroom entanglements. Tennessee state legislator Frank Niceley states, "There is a real Fluoridegate scandal here. Citizens haven't been told about harm from fluorides, and this needs to be investigated by the authorities and the media."
Washington D.C. toxic tort attorney Chris Nidel says, "I think when we look back we'll ask why Fluoridegate didn't surface earlier. There are serious concerns about possible conflict of interest and heavy editing of information being fed to the public about fluoride risks and impacts."

Don't drink the tap water: it has flouride in it

In 1980, when I was Asst. Prof. of Radiology, Biometrics, and Preventive Medicine at the University of Colorado Medical School, I stopped drinking tap water. One of the leading researchers in carcinogenesis from the National Institutes of health went through all the carcinogens they were finding in water in a briefing to medical school physicians.

Fortunately, where I live in Massachusetts, they have replaced chlorine with ozonated water. It has been well know for decades that this will reduce the cancer rate and actually ozonation purifies the water much better than chlorine. Unfortunately, the dental lobby continues to promote flouride in the water. These are the same people that think mercury won't harm you. Flouride is even worse than chlorine as it compromises brain function. Here is some of the latest research on this issue showing how we are making our children stupid by poisoning them.

More than 100 animal studies have linked fluoride to brain damage, and 24 additional studies in humans have found an association between high levels of fluoride in drinking water and reduced intelligence. Ding et al. (2010) studied 331 children ages 7-14 years living in Hulunbuir City, China, exposed to drinking water with fluoride levels <3 mg/L (mean: 1.31+1.05 mg/L; range: 0.24-2.84 mg/L). Urine fluoride levels, incidence of dental fluorosis (diagnosed with Dean's Index), and intelligence quotient (IQ, assessed with Combined Raven's Test for Rural China) were determined. The authors found a dose-dependent response between urine fluoride levels and incidence of dental fluorosis. Also observed was an inverse association between urine fluoride levels and IQ: a 0.59-point decrease in IQ was observed for each 1 mg/L increase in urine fluoride. Thus, low levels of fluoride in drinking water, even within the range of levels currently allowed, negatively impact children's intelligence and dental health.

Chronic exposure to elevated levels of fluoride results in decreased memory and learning ability, but the mechanisms underlying these effects are not known. To address this issue, Liu et al. (2010) exposed rats to varying concentrations of fluoride in drinking water for 6 months. As expected, spatial learning and memory of the rats were significantly reduced in both the low- (5 mg/L) and high (50 mg/L) fluoride groups when compared to the control group (<0.5 mg/L), as determined by increased times of Morris Water Maze tests. When compared with controls, both the low- and high fluoride exposed groups revealed altered expression of several proteins related to cognition in both rats and humans, including decreased protein expression for two nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (alpha- 4 and alpha-7 nAChR), increased expression for phospho- and total ERK1/2 and phospho-MEK1/2, and decreased activation rate of phospho-ERK1/2. Rats require water fluoride levels 4-5 times greater than humans to produce similar blood plasma fluoride levels. That these changes were observed in even the low fluoride group of the present study suggests similar alterations may be responsible for the decreased intelligence of children exposed to relatively low water fluoride levels, as in Ding et al. (above).

CDC reports 41% of 12-15 year-olds have dental fluorosis

Dental fluorosis refers to hypomineralization of the teeth, producing mottled, stained, pitted surfaces. Dental fluorosis is caused by exposure to systemic (ingested) fluoride during periods of tooth development. The prevalence of dental fluorosis has been increasing in the United States with the concomitant expansion of water fluoridation and the increasing ingestion of fluoride from other sources. Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) between 1999-2004 were analyzed, and were compared with data from the 1986-1987 National Survey of Oral Health in U.S. School Children. Both surveys assessed all permanent teeth using Dean's Fluorosis Index. Approximately 23% of Americans aged 6-49 had some definitive form of dental fluorosis between 1999-2004, and another 17% met the criteria for "questionable" fluorosis status. Among adolescents, 33% of those aged 6-11, 41% of those aged 12-15, and 36% of those aged 16-19 had some form of dental fluorosis. For adolescents aged 12-15, the prevalence of dental fluorosis increased from 23% in 1986-87 to 41% in 1999-2004, indicating that a large percentage of the U.S. population is being overexposed to fluoride.

Increased risk of fluorosis from infant formula reconstituted with fluoridated water

In the United States, the primary source of ingested fluoride is fluoridated water, including that used in the preparation of foods and other beverages. For many infants, formula is a major source of nutrition, and this formula is often reconstituted with fluoridated tap water. The concentration of fluoride in infant formulas reconstituted with "optimally" fluoridated water is up to 200 times greater than that found in breast milk. The Iowa Fluoride Study (IFS), as reported in Levy et al. (2010) determined fluoride intake of children starting at age 1.5 months via questionnaires completed by parents, and determined incidence and severity of dental fluorosis via dental exams administered when children were about 9 years of age. An increased incidence of dental fluorosis of permanent incisors was associated with increased fluoride intakes from reconstituted infant formulas between ages 3-9 months. According to the authors, fluorosis was associated with "higher consumption of powdered concentrate formula and higher fluoride levels in the water used to reconstitute the formula." The majority of participants in this study lived in areas with "optimally" fluoridated water. The authors state that formula prepared with "low-fluoride-content water would result in much less fluoride ingestion and, presumably, substantially less or milder dental fluorosis." Also reported was an increased risk of fluorosis due to higher intake of fluoridated toothpastes between 16-36 months.

At least one-quarter of UK population over-exposed to fluoride

Over-consumption of fluoride is an issue of concern worldwide, as fluoride has been linked to adverse health effects such as dental fluorosis, reduced thyroid function, weakened bones, skeletal fluorosis, and reduced intelligence. Mansfield (2010) re-analyzed data from the 2000-2003 UK National Diet and Nutrition Survey (NDNS). Using a revised calculation to estimate fluoride intake (i.e. 45% fluoride excretion rate based on current literature, instead of 100% excretion rate as was originally proposed), the author found that the original estimate of those exceeding the Safe Intake (SI) level for fluoride (0.05 mg/kg body weight/day, as established by the Committee on the Medical Aspects of Food Policy) was an order of magnitude too low--25% of the UK population is now estimated to exceed the SI for fluoride, and nearly two-thirds of those living in fully fluoridated areas exceed the SI for fluoride. The author concludes that "fluoridating water pushes the majority of consumers into excessive fluoride intake," and that small children are more susceptible to the long-term adverse health effects related to over-consumption, as they retain more fluoride than adults.

Fluoride decreases bone strength

Community water fluoridation has long been touted as a safe and effective means to reduce dental caries in a population, yet data on the long-term safety of low levels of systemic fluoride exposure on the myriad of body systems are either inconclusive or completely lacking. Ingested fluoride is incorporated into the bones, suggesting that exposure over a lifetime, even to the relatively low levels experienced via fluoridated water, may affect the structural or mechanical properties of bone. Chachra et al. (2010) compared bone specimens from residents of fluoridated Toronto to those of non-fluoridated Montreal, with the hypothesis that these populations would reveal patterns consistent with differences in long-term fluoride exposure. The fluoride content of bones from the fluoridated area was significantly higher than those from the non-fluoridated area. Bone from Toronto residents showed greater mean strain at ultimate compressive stress (UCS, an indicator of fracture risk) and greater energy absorbed to failure than bone from Montreal residents. However, the authors failed to control for age, which was greater for those residents in non-fluoridated Montreal. Bones typically weaken with age, and thus the effects of a more elderly population in Montreal may have obscured the full effect of fluoride on the Toronto population. A more relevant finding is that UCS and yield stress declined with increasing fluoride content of bone, indicating that bone strength decreases with increasing bone fluoride level. While similar animal studies have been performed, this is the first human epidemiological study to utilize such an analysis to study fluoride levels and risk of bone fracture, and thus should be seriously considered by public health officials when performing evidence-based risk assessments for fluoride exposures for the whole of the population.

Fluoride increases serum lead concentrations

Silicofluorides are used in more than 90% of artificially fluoridated water in the United States. However, an association between silicofluoride-treated community water and increased blood lead concentrations among children has been previously reported. Early exposure to lead results in cognitive impairment and lower IQ scores in children. Sawan et al. (2010) examined the effects of fluoride (as fluosilicic acid, H2SiF6, containing 100 mg/L F), co-administered with lead (as lead acetate, containing 30 mg/L Pb) on Wistar rats exposed from the beginning of gestation. As this was a proof-of-concept study, high levels of fluoride were administered to maximize the influence of fluoride on lead concentrations. After 81 days there were significantly higher blood lead concentrations, and two- to threefold higher lead concentrations in calcified tissues, in the F+Pb Group compared to the Pb Group. Thus, a biological effect not yet recognized may underlie the association between water fluoridation and increased blood lead levels observed in children.

In cases of acute fluoride poisoning, for example, the levels of available calcium can be so low as to cause cardiac arrest. Exposure to sub-acute levels of fluoride may have more subtle effects on the heart. Research by Varol et al. (2010a) found that fluorosis patients had significantly higher urine fluoride levels than controls, as expected. In addition, left ventricular myocardial performance index (MPI), calculated as (isovolumic contraction time+isovolumic relaxation time)/aortic ejection time, was also significantly higher in fluorosis patients than in matched controls, suggesting that patients with endemic fluorosis have left ventricular diastolic and global dysfunctions.

A related study by Varol et al. (2010b) found significantly lower aortic strain (AS) and aortic distensibility (AD), but significantly higher aortic strain index (ASI) in endemic fluorosis patients than in controls, indicating that the elastic properties of the ascending aorta are impaired in patients with endemic fluorosis. Thus sub-acute exposures to fluoride may manifest as cardiac dysfunction, potentially increasing future risks of cardiac-related problems.

Inflammatory reactions underlie the pathogenesis of the atherosclerotic process, and oxygen free radicals formed during these reactions contribute to aggravation of atherosclerotic lesions. Gutowska et al. (2010) incubated differentiated human THP1 monocytic cells (macrophages) in NaF solution for 48 h at concentrations similar to fluoride concentrations found in human serum (1, 3, 6 and 10 µM). Incubation of macrophages in fluoride solutions significantly decreased the amount of synthesized cellular ATP, and increased the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and apoptotic cells in a dose-dependent pattern. Thus fluoride may be considered pro-atherogenic and pro-apoptotic, and long-term exposure to low concentrations of fluoride may lead to harmful changes in cellular metabolism.
